About the IMA Education Program
The Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) was developed in part to support core curriculum teaching. Much of its content is aligned to the Australian Curriculum (F-10), Victorian Curriculum (F-10), and a number of VCE subjects, including History.
IMA is a great place to engage in intercultural dialogue and develop intercultural understanding. This relates to the Australian Curriculum general capability of Intercultural Understanding and Intercultural Capability within the Victorian curriculum.
Engaging with IMA can also support enactment of aspects of the Australian professional standards for teachers. Relevant standards include:
- 1 – Know students and how they learn, if you are teaching Muslim students
- 2 – Know the content and how to teach it
- 6 – Engage in professional learning
Our permanent galleries can support teaching and learning around:
- The history of Islam and Muslims in Australia, what Muslims believe in and do, including Muslim celebrations, and Islamic contributions to civilisation, including famous Muslim explorers (Australian Curriculum: Primary Humanities and Social Sciences)
- Relations between Islam and the West during Medieval Europe (Australian Curriculum: History, Year 8)
- The Ottoman Empire, in particular the ways of the Ottomans and of Ottoman society (Australian Curriculum: History, Year 8; VCE History)
- Migration of Muslims to Australia and the implications of this migration (Australian Curriculum: History, Year 9 and Year 10; VCE History)
